Being married to another Pacific culture other then my own
is very interesting indeed. I have learnt so much about Fiji in this
time being married to a fijian, there are different traditions for everything,
Wedding, Births, Birthdays, Death etc..
It is quite interesting, When I gave birth to Isis - She was my first born,
so there is a ceremony at home where the family all
go to the baby's house and offer gifts to the Newborn, they wrap baby in Tapa
and a long material - and pass her around the family.
Words are exchanged from one family to the next and
a hand clap is exchanged in respect of what they have to say.
They bless baby and wish many more blessings towards baby's life.
In this case we welcomed 'Esther - Calais Litia Qalia Tiqatabua'
Daughter of Seru and Carmel Tiqatabua.
Seru is related to my husband's father, and seeing as how this is Seru's First- Born, this ceremony was done to welcome baby Esther into the family.
She is a mix of Maori and Fijian and is absolutely beautiful.
Such a blessing to her parents and family.
After the ceremony there is a feed provided from the Newborns
Family, I don't know whether this is compulsory, but I have
seen it done in many Pacific Cultures - after a Celebrations
as this, food after the Ceremony is usually taken place.
We had a variety of Fijian Curries, fish, Vegetables, Chow mein and rice
as well as some yummy dessert to follow. It was delicious.
I love Fijian food- especially if it's spicy: Mmmm.
Some of the Fijian Children:
Top Left: Esther (Another Esther in the family)
Top Right: Isis and baby Esther-Calais.
Bottom Left: Aunty Francis from Fiji.
Bottom Right: Our little fijian Prince Joshua.
This Ceremony was Unique and very different from other
Pacific Cultures, especially my own - Samoan.
It is always lovely to learn and educate myself on
my daughters Fijian side so she will hopefully be Bilingual
in both Cultures in the future.
Welcome to the world Princess Esther-Calais.
xx
